Upon arrival at Dunhuang Airport, you’ll be warmly greeted by our local guide and driver, who will assist with transferring you to your hotel for check-in. Take some time to rest and rejuvenate before setting out for your afternoon exploration.
Venture to Mingshashan, situated just 10 km from downtown Dunhuang. Delve into the enchanting realm of the Echoing Sand Mountains, where nature’s orchestral melodies resonate even without the presence of wind. Glide down the sand dunes to experience the captivating echoes firsthand, or opt for thrilling activities such as sand skiing, glider or helicopter rides, or motorcycling (additional fees apply). Today’s highlight: Mogao Grottoes
After breakfast, embark on a short drive of approximately 10 km from Dunhuang city to visit the newly opened Mogao Grottoes Digital Exhibition Center. Here, immerse yourself in two informative documentary films that provide invaluable insights into the history, art, and significance of the Mogao Grottoes, preparing you for your upcoming visit. Following the screenings, board an internal bus to reach the Mogao Grottoes.
Renowned as the “Louvre of the East,” the Mogao Grottoes mesmerize with their exquisite mural paintings and statues. Housing a staggering 492 grottoes adorned with approximately 45,000 square meters of mural paintings and 2,100 intricately painted statues, the site offers a captivating journey through over 1,600 years of Chinese art history. Each dynasty contributed to the grottoes, leaving behind a rich tapestry of artistic expression. Within the tourist area, you’ll be grouped with tour guides who will lead you on a guided exploration of 7 to 8 caves (typically 12 caves during December to March), providing insightful commentary along the way. In the afternoon, you’ll be escorted to the train station to catch your high-speed bullet train to Turpan. Departing from Liuyuan South Railway Station, the journey to Turpan takes approximately 3.5 hours. Upon arrival at Turpan North Railway Station, your local guide will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in the city. Enjoy the remainder of the day at your leisure.
Helpful Tips: 1. During peak seasons (May to October), it’s advisable to make advance reservations for the Mogao Caves, ideally at least 7 days in advance. 2. For access to Special Caves, which require separate reservations, consult with our travel consultants or your tour guide. Additional admission fees apply for each cave. 3. Photography is prohibited inside the grottoes.

Day 6 Turpan - Urumqi

Today’s highlights: Tuyuk Vaillage, Karez System, Jiaohe Ancient City
Following breakfast at the hotel, embark on a scenic drive to Tuyu Valley, tracing the path along Flaming Mountain Grand Canyon. Immortalized in the Chinese classic “Journey to the West,” Flaming Mountain is a legendary terrain where the monk Xuan Zang must traverse, quenching the blaze with a magical fan to continue his journey. As you journey through Flaming Mountain Grand Canyon, marvel at the striking landscape, characterized by fiery-red sandstone formations resembling flames, intricate rock formations, and deep gorges.
Continuing along the winding road hugging the cliffside, arrive at Tuyuk Valley, an ancient Uighur valley steeped in history. Discover Mazar Village, the oldest existing Uighur village with a rich heritage spanning over 2,600 years. Revered in both Buddhism and Islam, Mazar Village holds cultural significance as an Eastern Mekka and a former Buddhist center. Your exploration of this legendary city begins with a visit to the Abakh Hoja Tomb, an exquisite architectural complex showcasing the exceptional aesthetics and Islamic craftsmanship of the Uygur people. Today’s adventure takes you to the renowned Karakul Lake, located approximately 190 km from downtown Kashgar, a journey of about 3 hours. Despite the distance, the scenic drive offers a continuous panorama of the majestic Pamirs Plateau, showcasing its rugged snow-capped peaks, vast grasslands, and serene villages. Along the way, make a stop at Baishahu, or White Sands Dunes Lake, where tranquil waters rest beneath the imposing Pamirs mountains. Here, the sands of the Taklamakan Desert meet the mountains, forming white sand dunes that create a stunning contrast against the landscape.
Arriving at Karakul Lake around noon, savor a delicious lunch before immersing yourself in the breathtaking scenery. Spanning a vast area, the bazaar offers a plethora of goods, from traditional Muslim attire to exotic spices, authentic carpets, and an array of fresh produce. Immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere as you browse through the eclectic offerings, interact with local vendors, and perhaps indulge in some delectable local snacks.
If your visit coincides with a Sunday, seize the opportunity to witness the Livestock Market, a weekly event that showcases the region’s agricultural heritage.
