This morning, embark on a scenic 78km drive (approximately 1.5 hours) from Kunming to the renowned Stone Forest (Shilin), an expansive natural wonder spanning over 300 square kilometers. Marvel at the towering formations of black limestone, sculpted over 270 million years by the forces of wind and rain. Once submerged beneath an ancient sea, these limestone and dolomite formations now resemble a forest of stone trees, rising to an elevation of 1,500 meters. Explore the Big Stone Forest and Small Stone Forest aboard a sightseeing bus, immersing yourself in the poignant legend of Ashima and the rich minority culture that permeates this iconic tourist destination.

Return to Kunming (91km, approximately 1.5 hours) after your Stone Forest adventure and take a leisurely stroll through the historic Yuantong Temple (Yuantong Si). Dating back over 1,200 years to the Tang dynasty, this sprawling Buddhist temple is renowned as Kunming’s largest. Unlike traditional temples with ascending entrances, the Yuantong Temple invites visitors from above, leading down to its grand hall situated at the temple’s lowest point. Admire the temple’s architectural splendor and spiritual ambiance, enhanced by a revered statue of Sakyamuni, a gift from Thailand’s King. Witness the influx of pilgrims and locals, particularly during the Qingming Festivals and the first and fifth days of each lunar month. If time permits, meander through the tranquil surroundings of Green Lake Park (Cui Hu Park), an urban oasis in Kunming. Conclude your day with a well-deserved rest at your hotel.

Upon arrival at Dali Railway Station, you’ll be greeted by your local guide and driver, who will whisk you away to the enchanting surroundings of Dali Ancient Town for today’s exploration.
Your first destination is the iconic Three Pagodas and Chongsheng Temple, emblematic of Dali’s cultural heritage. Comprising one large pagoda and two smaller ones, these ancient structures form an equilateral triangle, each steeped in history and architectural significance. The Qianxun Pagoda, erected in the mid-9th century, stands as a testament to ancient engineering prowess. Adjacent to the pagodas, Chongsheng Temple, once the royal temple of Dali, offers a serene setting for reflection and reverence. Capture the mesmerizing sight of the Three Pagodas reflected in the tranquil waters of the nearby pond before proceeding to the next leg of your journey.
Embark on a scenic excursion to Erhai Lake, renowned as the “Immaculate Jade Between Mountains,” China’s second-largest highland lake. Board a leisurely cruise across the azure waters of Erhai Lake, soaking in panoramic views of the verdant Cangshan Mountain and distant Three Pagodas. Marvel at flocks of birds and seagulls gracefully gliding overhead, adding to the picturesque ambiance of your cruise. (Note: For those seeking adventure, optional cycling or sightseeing bus tours around Erhai Lake are available upon request.)
Conclude your day with a visit to the venerable Dali Old Town, steeped in 1200 years of history as the former capital of the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms. Wander through labyrinthine streets adorned with historic sites, ancient edifices, and vibrant markets. Admire the architectural splendor of Wuhua Tower and ascend for panoramic vistas of the ancient town. Begin your day with a scenic 37km (approximately 1.5 hours) drive to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain National Park (Yulong Snow Mountain). Following your mountain adventure, savor a delectable lunch amidst the historic ambiance of Baisha Ancient Town, the earliest settlement of the Naxi ethnic minority. With a rich history spanning over 800 years, Baisha Ancient Town boasts an array of Ming Dynasty-era architectural marvels, including Dabaoji Palace, Liuli Temple, and Wenchang Palace. In the afternoon, continue your exploration of Lijiang with a visit to Black Dragon Pool Park (Heilongtan Park) and the Old Town of Lijiang. Capture stunning photographs of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, weather permitting, against the tranquil backdrop of Black Dragon Pool Park. Delve into the rich cultural heritage of the Naxi people at the Dongba Cultural Institute, housed within a renovated complex on the hillside. Here, peruse an array of Naxi cultural artifacts and scrolls adorned with the unique Naxi pictographic script, offering deeper insight into this fascinating culture.

Continuing your drive, you’ll venture to Tiger Leaping Gorge, situated approximately 2.5 hours away from Shangri-La. Renowned for its legendary origins, Tiger Leaping Gorge derives its name from a fabled tale of a tiger’s daring leap across the roaring Jinsha River, part of the mighty Yangtze River. As one of the world’s deepest gorges, Tiger Leaping Gorge captivates with its awe-inspiring grandeur and the raw power of nature. Framed by the towering peaks of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (5596m) and Haba Snow Mountain (5386m), this majestic gorge offers a captivating glimpse into the diverse and breathtaking landscapes of the region.
